Brachypodium distachyon is an established model species for temperate grasses and was the first member of the Poaceae subfamily to have its genome fully sequenced. Its small genome size and high suitability for laboratory experimentation make it a valuable system for grass genomics research. Brachypodium is increasingly used in structural and functional genomics studies due to the availability of advanced genetic and genomic resources. Current research focuses on natural variation at phenotypic and genomic levels, responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, and traits related to biofuel-relevant grass improvement. Ongoing efforts also aim to expand collections of sequence-indexed mutant lines.
